Summary

VANLYFE has no ads and no tracking. We never sell your data, and we don't share it with anyone for advertising. The only usage data we collect is the anonymous ping described under Usage ping.

Your location

Your location is used on your phone to find places near you. It stays on your phone unless you turn on Show me on the map (Community › Settings › Travelers). Then the app sends your position to our server, rounded to about 1 km unless you choose Exact, and other travelers who also share can see it with your display name and status for up to 6 hours after your last update. If you also turn on Keep sharing when the app is closed, the app keeps sending it while the app is closed (when you move about 500 m on iPhone, about every 15 minutes on Android). Turning sharing off, signing out or deleting your account removes your position at once. When you search for a place by name or address, the search goes to Apple's MapKit search service.

The Today tab shows the weather where you are. To do that, the app sends the coordinates of the area you are looking at (your location, unless you searched somewhere else) to the US National Weather Service (api.weather.gov), rounded to about 10 meters. If you tap Load live map, the same coordinates, rounded to about 100 meters, go to Windy (windy.com). No account details or device identifiers are sent with them.

Air quality, cloud cover and tides send the same coordinates to Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) and NOAA (tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov).

The Pollen card sends the same coordinates, rounded to about 10 km, to Google's Pollen API (Google Privacy Policy).

If you turn on Alerts, your phone keeps its last location on the phone only and, about every 30 minutes, sends it to the National Weather Service and Open-Meteo to check for alerts.

Along a route sends your start and destination to Apple Maps (iPhone) or the FOSSGIS OSRM server at routing.openstreetmap.de (Android).

Optional account

You can use every finding feature without an account. If you create one to contribute, we keep your email address, your password and a random user ID on our own Supabase server at vanlife-api.brokejokes.com. If you sign in with Google or Apple instead, we receive only your name and email address from them (Google: the openid, email and profile scopes) and use them only to create and sign in to your VANLYFE account; we never get your password there and never share this data. Passwords are stored hashed, never in plain text. Your email is used only to sign you in and to send sign-in and confirmation codes. If you turn on Show me on the map, we also keep the display name and status you enter, which other sharing travelers see. If you set up a profile in the Community tab, we also keep the rig, bio and photo you add; every signed-in member can see your profile.

Tips you post are public and show no name.

What you contribute

Messages

Messages you send to other travelers are stored on our server so they can be delivered. They are not end-to-end encrypted. In the app, only you and the person you write to can read them.

When a message arrives, our server sends a notification with the sender's name and the start of the message through Apple Push Notification service (iPhone) or Firebase Cloud Messaging by Google (Android). To do that, the app gives our server a push token for your phone; it is removed when you sign out or delete your account.

If you report a message, it is hidden at once and a copy goes to our moderators, who review it. That copy stays with the report even if the account that sent it is deleted. Our moderators don't read messages nobody reported.

A conversation and its messages are deleted when you or the person you wrote to deletes their account.

Usage ping

When you open the app, it sends a short ping to our server: a random install ID that the app makes up on first launch, whether it's the iPhone or Android app, and the app and operating system versions. The ID is not tied to your account or to your device, and deleting the app resets it. Cloudflare, which sits in front of our server, derives an approximate location from your IP address; our server keeps that city-level location (rounded to about 1 km), the country and the time of the ping, and does not store your IP address. We use this only to count how many people use VANLYFE and roughly where. Pings are deleted after 90 days.

Services that receive your device's IP address

When the app loads content, your phone connects directly to these services, which see your device's IP address like any website would:

Street View, Look around, Satellite, the 3D view, Mapillary, KartaView, Panoramax, Wikimedia Commons, Flickr and the On Google Maps card receive the coordinates of the place you are looking at, or of the map area on screen, not your own location. Search Google nearby sends the map's centre, which is your location when the map is centred on you. Links such as Open in Windy or Open in Zoom Earth open in your browser and pass along the coordinates shown on screen.

Deleting your data

In the app, open Community › Settings › Account and tap Delete account. This removes your account, your profile and its photo, your conversations and messages, your photos and your traveler profile and position. Spots and edits already published in the map data stay, without any link to you. Clearing the app's storage, or deleting the app, removes everything stored on the phone.

Children

VANLYFE is not directed at children under 13.
